I hope that everyone has had a super summer full of family, friends, and fun! Welcome to our Room 18 family! My name is Mr. Shumway and I will be your teacher this year. We have a super busy and super exciting year in store for us! I look forward to meeting you all at Back to School Night.
Parents, I realize that teaching your child is a privilege, as well as a tremendous responsibility. I will do my best this year to ensure that each student has a motivating and safe learning experience in the classroom. However, I cannot do this alone: I need your help. We both need to be partners in the learning process. I will need you to encourage your child at home by helping to ensure that they have completed their assignments, and help them study and prepare for tests. Weekly homework assignments and information regarding tests and quizzes will be posted on this website weekly. I will also post short video explanations of concepts covered in class so students can review those concepts at home.
Students, if you are feeling a little nervous about making that leap into fifth grade, I have a few simple things that you can do to ensure that you start off the year prepared and ready to learn. First, brush up on your basic multiplication and division facts. Second, get in the habit of reading 20 to thirty minutes daily. Finally, you may want to take advantage of some of the back to school sales to get any supplies you may need. Here is a list of supplies that students typically find useful.
Suggested supplies:
o Notebook paper (to be replenished throughout the year)
o #2 Pencils (I prefer students use mechanical pencils)
o 1.5” , 3 ring binder
o 6 subject tab dividers
o Dry-Erase markers
